Ribbon Blender Working Principle (Pharma Use)

Ribbon Blender Working Principle (Pharma Use)

A Ribbon Blender is a batch mixing machine widely used in the pharmaceutical industry for powders, granules, and bulk materials.

Its mixing action is based on the counter-flow movement of material inside a U-shaped trough.

⚙️ Main Components

  1. U-Shaped Trough – The container that holds the material.
  2. Shaft with Inner & Outer Helical Ribbons – The core mixing element.
  • Outer Ribbon: Moves material from the ends → to the center.
  • Inner Ribbon: Moves material from the center → to the ends.
  1. Motor & Gearbox – Provides controlled rotation (typically 20–25 rpm).
  2. Discharge Valve – Allows complete, easy emptying.

🔄 Working Principle

  1. Loading – Pharmaceutical powders, granules, or excipients are fed into the blender.
  2. Ribbon Rotation – The helical ribbons rotate at moderate speed.
  3. Counter-Current Mixing
  • The outer Ribbon pushes material inward.
  • The inner ribbon pushes material outward.
  • This creates a radial and axial flow, ensuring continuous mixing.
  1. Shearing & Folding – Materials are sheared, lifted, and folded, breaking lumps and achieving homogeneity.
  2. Uniform Mixing – Within 15–20 minutes, a highly uniform blend (up to 95–98% homogeneity) is achieved.
  3. Discharge – The bottom valve opens for smooth product discharge without residue.

Why Used in Pharma

  • Achieves uniform mixing of powders, granules, and excipients.
  • Prevents segregation of active ingredients (API).
  • Gentle mixing → suitable for heat-sensitive or fragile materials.
  • Scalable → Available from small R&D models to large production models.

🔹 Example Applications in Pharma:

  • Mixing of API with excipients (tablets, capsules).
  • Blending nutraceutical powders.
  • Preparing granules for compression.
